The Dallas Cowboys didnt draft themselves a starting safety Youth Robert Newhouse Jersey , but that doesnt mean they cant get on by pulling of a trade with the Oakland Raiders to acquire Karl Joseph."WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Dallas Cowboys NewsDallas Cowboys GeneralHow the Amari Cooper trade could still land the Cowboys a former first-round safetyNew,196commentsThere is only one box left to check off this offseason and heres how to do it.CDTShareTweetShareShareHow the Amari Cooper trade could still land the Cowboys a former first-round safetyIsaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY SportsIn a draft that seemed to line up perfectly for the Dallas Cowboys in terms of landing one of the top safeties available, the team opted to let them pass by in favor of high-upside defensive tackle Trysten Hill. You cant fault the team for choosing talent over need, but the safeties available were pretty darn good. In fact, it came down to Hill or Virginia safety Juan Thornhill, but Rod Marinelli favored the under tackle from Central Florida.Hill is a nice add to the defense, but the team still lacks talent at the safety position. You can go up and down the roster and see some pretty nice depth at just about every position with the lone exception of safety. And with another draft in the books, what are the Cowboys to do?Enter the Oakland Raiders, the Cowboys favorite trading partner. In just a years time, the Cowboys have made three deals with the Raiders acquiring Amari Cooper, Jamize Olawale, and Jihad Ward. It just so happens that the Raiders have made some pretty nice upgrades to their safety position this offseason. First, they signed free agent Lamarcus Joyner to a four-year, $42 million deal. Then, they used one of their three first-round draft picks to grab strong safety stud Johnathan Abram. Combine those guys with 2016 first-round pick Karl Joseph and just like that the Raiders are crowded at safety. The new moves by Oakland could relegate Joseph to a reserve role. Its been an interesting start to his career with the Raiders. Early struggles have made some believe he was a first-round bust. During the first half of last season, he was hardly being utilized. He logged only 55 snaps over five games in the first half and was even a healthy scratch at times. Thats not promising. Many thought he would be the next victim of the Jon Gruden fire sale and shipped off before the trade deadline. The second half of the season turned out to be completely different as Joseph came on strong.Joseph has been on the Cowboys radar for a while as he was one of their 2016 official pre-draft visitors. Hes far more valuable to the Cowboys in a starting role than on the bench in Oakland. Joseph still has one more year left on his rookie deal as well as a fifth-year option that could be exercised. This could buy the team a couple years to sort things out at safety while having a good strong safety for relatively cheap. It seems like a great deal for Dallas, but why would the Raiders be interested in doing this?Oakland entered the draft with several needs. They addressed a couple of their biggest needs at defensive end and running back by drafting Clelin Ferrell (4th overall) and Josh Jacobs (24th), but still have a couple glaring holes. Allow me to introduce exhibit A. Notice anything unsettling about this ESPN depth chart if youre a Raiders fan?The Raiders drafted nine players this past weekend Robert Newhouse Jersey Stitched , but not a single one of them was an offensive linemen. Thats a problem.Oakland could mitigate this issue by trading for Cowboys offensive lineman Lael Collins. The Cowboys would love to retain Collins for the long haul, but the financial aspects likely mean this will be the last year hes playing for Dallas. And with the team using a third-round pick to select Connor McGovern, the Cowboys now have an abundance of depth on the offensive line.A trade like this makes a lot of sense for both teams who are deep at one position, but are lacking in another. If Joseph or Collins arent expected to be a part of their current teams future, then it would be a great opportunity to ship them off to help strengthen a weak spot on the team. All this was made possible by the teams new draft acquisitions, including Abram who coincidentally was the pick the Raiders received from the Cowboys for Amari Cooper. Wouldnt that be a nice little act of fate if the Cooper deal had this type of trickle down effect? The Dallas Cowboys defeated the travelling Seattle Seahawks by two points and the late-game magic by Russell Wilson was just that...too late. On just about every pregame broadcast, there are mentions about how many one-score games the Cowboys find themselves in. Its often in a cheeky tone as if wins show up differently for those that get style points. Winning is winning and teams that pull out the close ones are built for the playoffs, its the mark of a mentally tough football team. This season, Dallas has just one win where the final score was decided by more than one possession. In 10 of their 11 victories on the season, the victory margin is at 4.6 points but that really doesnt tell the story of these games. The NFL isnt the same as the college game where coaches like Nick Saban are infuriated to be tied 10-10 with Citadel at halftime. In the NFL, you can dominate an opponent and still have the game end by a field goal or less. Thats what the Cowboys have done this season quite a bit and did it again to the Seahawks. Sure, that final score 24-22 makes some sweat bullets but realize it really wasnt that close of a call for the home team Dallas Cowboys. An hour or so before kickoff, I wrote about which defense to trust most in this Seattle-Dallas game. It came down to three important keys: Limiting explosive plays, holding serve in the red zone, and run defense. The Seahawks best chance of winning was running the football. Seattle got to the playoffs by averaging 168 rushing yards per game in their 10 wins. Well, on Saturday, Seattles first-ranked rushing offense with Chris Carson, Rashaad Penny Youth Daryl Johnston Jersey , and the quick-feet of Russell Wilson were humbled by the Cowboys fifth-best run defense. Seattles 13th-ranked defense made a huge mistake by allowing the leagues leading rusher Ezekiel Elliott get loose. Elliott out-gained Seattles entire offense by halftime:1st HalfTot. PlaysTot. YdsRush YdsAttemptsYds/Att.Rec. YdsRec.Yds/Rec.Not that its even fair but just look at Elliotts numbers vs. Chris Carsons on the other side:1st HalfTouchesTot. YdsRush YdsAttemptsYds/Att.Rec. YdsRec.Yds/Rec.Despite the Seahawks incessant attempts to run the football, the Cowboys defense ended up allowing only 73 yards on 24 attempts, only three yards per carry. The Cowboys offense countered with two-times as much production as Dak Prescotts 29 rushing yards tied Seattles leading rusher, Rashaad Penny. Also of note, Penny had four rushing attempts for 29 yards, all but one of that 29 came on one carry. The stats may say that Seattle was the best running football team this year but four of their seven losses this season came when they put up 150+ yards on the ground. Dallas only has one loss in a game where they had 150+ rushing yards but they also had three turnovers.Running is the Cowboys calling card and though a few teams have stopped them before, theyve also taken it to some of the best run defenses this season. Against playoff teams this season, the Cowboys have 160 carries for 788 yards, almost five yards per carry. After the Bears, Texans, and Ravens were all eliminated during wildcard weekend, the Saints, Cowboys, and Eagles are your top run defenses left in the tournament allowing less than 100 yards per game. When Seattle couldnt run, they became completely reliant on Russell Wilsons knack for explosive playmaking. Hes one of those rare quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers that will manufacture the most improbable plays at the right time for his team.Wilson had three completions of 26, 40, and 25 yards in the second-quarter. When you have a guy like Tyler Lockett that can win early and late, its going to be a matchup problem. However Daryl Johnston Jersey Stitched , the Cowboys didnt allow a single explosive score and theyre ability to shut down the run made those explosive plays a necessity for Seattle to move the ball on offense.Expl. PlaysPlays1st HalfYds/Play2nd HalfYds/PlayAvg.Expl. TDsKeep in mind that 166 of Wilsons 233 passing yards came on five completions. On the other 13 passes, Wilson was averaging 5.1 yards per completion. Overall, it may seem like Seattle hit play-after-play with big YAC numbers but the Dallas offense matched Seattles six explosive plays. Dallas ended up trailing the yards per play average by about six yards. At the 2:14 mark in the fourth quarter, Seattle had just called their final timeout after Dak Prescott converted a 3rd and 14 on a QB draw, ending at the Seattle one. On the next play, Dak sneaked in for the touchdown and Dallas was up 24-14 with 2:08 to play, capping off their third successful red zone trip of the night. Seattle was one of three on the night in the short field. Sure, the Seahawks managed to get down there and scored eight points but then had to rely on an onside kick recovery to stand a chance. An expected onside attempt was only successful 8% of the time in the 2018 regular season, how much does that percentage decrease when the team doesnt have a kicker? Seattles offense was dominated by the Cowboys defense despite some big-time time plays made by an incredible quarterback. There is nothing different in this game that we havent seen alreadyin games against the Giants, Redskins, Eagles, and Buccaneers. The Cowboys get up by two scores and dare you to catch up before the clock runs 0:00. More often than not, its close but not enough.Thats the Cowboys winning formula, controlling the pace with long drives that grind opponents into submission. Then, they send out a young defense to harass the opposing offense with their speed and athleticism. Dallas may be scoring in the twenties while others are routinely above that mark but look who scored the most points of wildcard weekend. This is the playoffs, points arent easy to get and the majority of games are decided by three or less. That certainly seems favorable for teams like the Cowboys.
